Patrol Roster & Rules

Patrol Captain

The Patrol Captain leads the patrol, manages risk, allocates roles, oversees rescues, ensures compliance with SLSA procedures, and is responsible for the safety of the public and the patrol team. They make operational decisions and liaise with Council lifeguards and emergency services.

Vice-Captain

Supports the Patrol Captain, helps manage patrol operations, supervises sections of the beach, and steps into the captain’s role if required. Often coordinates equipment checks and member readiness.

IRB Driver

A qualified Silver Medallion IRB Driver responsible for operating the Inflatable Rescue Boat safely. They lead IRB rescue operations, manage surf entry/exit, and ensure the IRB is maintained and ready.

IRB Crew

Supports the IRB Driver by performing rescues from the IRB, assisting patients into the boat, maintaining balance and lookout, and helping with equipment checks and launch/recovery.

First Aid Officer

Provides first aid, manages patient care, maintains first aid equipment, completes incident reports, and supports the Patrol Captain during medical emergencies.

Radio Operator

Manages communications between patrol members, IRB, Council lifeguards, SurfCom, and emergency services. Ensures correct radio procedure and logs key events.

Roving Patrol Members

Patrol the beach on foot or with rescue boards, monitor conditions, identify hazards, educate beachgoers, and respond quickly to incidents.

Tower/Observation Members

Maintain surveillance from the patrol tower, monitor swimmers, identify developing risks, and alert the Patrol Captain to hazards or incidents.

Board/Ski Rescue Operators

Use rescue boards or skis to respond rapidly to swimmers in difficulty, support IRB operations, and patrol high-risk zones such as rips and gutters.

General Patrol Members

Bronze Medallion or SRC holders who support all patrol functions: surveillance, rescues, first aid, public education, and equipment setup/pack-down.
