2017 Aussies Report

Aussies got off to a great start on the first weekend with the Youth Championships taking place in beautiful Gold Coast weather. There were some stand out performances on the beach with a couple of gold medals won by Jacinta Davidson-Bunch and Isabellah Walker, and also some great results in the water with most athletes making finals.

The 2km Ocean Swim, as part of the Open Championships, took place on Sunday with a silver medal won by Harry Came in the U17 Mens event. Monday saw Alanna Street compete in the Open Champion Lifesaver, coming away with 8th place.
Masters took over on Monday and Tuesday with a silver to Tim Tardent in the 40-44yrs Mens Beach Flags followed by board riding events on Wednesday where Paul Larssen picked up a gold and silver in his 60-69yrs Mens Long Board and Short Board respectively.

Opens started at Kirra Beach on Wednesday with some events running through to finals but unfortunately due to adverse weather off the back of Cyclone Debbie, the water events never made it back to the start line. When competition resumed for the beach events we witnessed the Breen brothers taking out the U17 and Open Mens 2km Beach Run. This set the scene for Saturday and Sunday sprints, relays and flags which saw more medals won across a range of events including Chloe Mannix-Power in U17 Female Sprint, who then teamed up with Kate Hawkings, Phoebe La Coste and Bridget Cole to take out gold in the U17 Female Beach Relay.

The U19’s picked up a medal in both events for male and female with silver to the U19 Male Beach Relay, bronze to the U19 Female Beach Relay and individual bronze to both Daniel Karagiannis and Ngaire Hadfield in the U19 Beach Sprint. Ngaire backed up with gold in the U19 Female Beach Flags along with a number of other members making finals in tough competition.
Overall Cronulla place 10th in the point score based on limited events run.
Thanks to Team Manager – Paul Cavanagh for another outstanding job! Along with all assistant managers, captains, coaches, officials, water safety, supporters and of course the volunteer members who patrolled Cronulla Beach over the Aussies weekend!
