Awards and Courses

Cronulla Surf Club’s trainers provide a range of courses members can undertake. The list of awards available to members is detailed here.

Aquatic Rescue & Public Safety Awards

Surf Rescue Certificate

The SRC provides members with skills and knowledge related to surf awareness, aquatic rescue operations, communication systems and equipment and resuscitation. It is recommended for members who wish to perform in the role of SLS water safety personnel or take on a lifesaving cadetship and join a lifesaving patrol.

Prerequisites

  • be a financial member of an SLS club
  • be at least 13 years of age on the final assessment date
  • complete an unaided swim of 200 m in 5 minutes or less

Radio Operator

Covers the skills and knowledge to perform basic communication practices.

Prerequisites

  • Candidates must be at least 13 years of age on the date of final assessment

Bronze Medallion / Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)

The BM provides members with skills and knowledge related to surf awareness, aquatic rescue operations, radio operations, resuscitation, emergency care, spinal management, communication, teamwork and SLS patrol operations. This award includes and builds upon the Surf Rescue Certificate, and it is the prerequisite award for many other SLS pathway awards.

Prerequisites

  • be a financial member of an SLS club
  • be at least 15 years of age on the final assessment date
  • complete an unaided swim of 400 m in 8 minutes or less

Silver Medallion Beach Management

Covers the skills, knowledge and experience to manage a beach in emergency and non-emergency situations.

Prerequisites

  • be at least 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • hold the Bronze Medallion award and the Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
  • be proficient in at least ONE of the following:
    • Bronze Medallion
    • First Aid
    • Radio Operator
    • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
    • Spinal Management.

Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue

Covers the skills and knowledge to participate in search and rescue operations.

Prerequisites

  • be at least 16 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • complete a 400 metre swim in 8 minutes or less in a swimming pool of no less than 25m length
  • hold and be proficient in the SLSA Bronze Medallion

Gold Medallion

Covers advanced skills and knowledge to manage emergency situations in autonomous situations.

Prerequisites

  • be at least 17 years old on the date of assessment
  • hold and be proficient in all of the following SLSA awards:
    • Bronze Medallion
    • First Aid
    • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
    • Silver Medallion Beach Management or Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management

Powercraft Awards

Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Crewperson

Covers with the skills and knowledge to effectively crew an IRB in surf rescue operations.

Prerequisites

  • be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • be currently proficient in Bronze Medallion

Silver Medallion Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Driver

Covers the skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage an IRB in surf rescue operations.

Prerequisites

  • be at least 16 years of age to commence training
  • be at least 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • hold and be currently proficient in:
    • Bronze Medallion and Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
    • IRB Crewperson Certificate
  • meet local state/NT marine licensing requirements where required

Rescue Water Craft (RWC) Operator

Covers the skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage a Rescue Water Craft (RWC) in lifesaving operations.

Prerequisites

  • Be at least 17 years of age to commence training
  • be at least 18 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • hold and be proficient in the following awards:
    • Bronze Medallion
    • First Aid Certificate
    • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate
    • SLSA Silver Medallion Beach Management Award
    • SLSA Silver Medallion IRB Driver Award
  • A current, valid vehicle license with tow capacity
  • An appropriate and current State Maritime License
  • • Three (3) years active SLS experience

First Aid Awards

Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate (ARTC)

Develops skills and knowledge to use oxygen, airway management devices, and automated external defibrillators (AEDs) during resuscitation, and to administer oxygen to conscious or unconscious breathing causalities.

Prerequisites

  • be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • be a financial member of an SLS club
  • hold one of the following SLSA awards
    • Bronze Medallion/Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
    • First Aid
    • Resuscitation

First Aid (AID)

Develops skills and knowledge to manage emergency first aid situations until professional medical support is available. This course is recognised by WorkCover NSW.

Prerequisites

  • Candidates must be at least 14 years of age on the date of final assessment

Spinal Management

Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to manage injured casualties with suspected spinal injuries in an aquatic environment and in emergency situations.

Prerequisites

  • be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • be proficient in one of the following SLSA awards:
    • Bronze Medallion OR
    • First Aid
  • hold one of the following units of competency:
    • HLTFA211A or HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support OR
    • HLTAID003 Provide first aid

Pain Management

Covers the skills and knowledge required to carry and administer Methoxyflurane.

Prerequisites

  • be at least 18 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • be a financial member of an SLS club
  • meet your state licensing requirements of Schedule S4 drugs
  • be proficient in the following SLSA award:
    • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate.
  • hold the following units of competency:
    • HLTAID003 Provide first aid
    • HLTAID007 Provide advanced resuscitation.
  • hold one of the following units of competency:
    • HLTFA211A Provide basic emergency life support OR
    • HLTFA311A Apply first aid.
